How to make a cava tower
Weddings or New Year's Eve, where no expense is spared on impressive measures and where everything can be a bit lavish, are the perfect occasions to create a bubbly sculpture such as a cava tower or cava pyramid.
See here how to build your own.
How big should the pyramid be?
Start by figuring out how many stories tall you want your tower to be. You have 1 glass on top (1×1=1) and then 4 on the next level below that (2×2=4). Then 9 on the next level (3×3=9), 16 on the level below that (4×4=16), and then 25 on the level below that (5×5=25). Keep adding layers that are a number higher (multiplied by itself) until you reach the final number of glasses you need or the height you envisioned.
First level
To make your tower, start by arranging your bottom level on a sturdy table and base and in a square, with each glass touching all the glasses surrounding it.
Other levels
The next level is constructed by placing glass where the edges of the glass meet from the level below. Again, the glass of the new level should be edge to edge. Try to get the second level as close to each other as possible, with contact between the sides if you can. For layer number 2, simply continue adding layers in the same way until you only have one glass on top!
How to pour cava
Typically, you will choose to leave all the glasses empty and pour the cava into the top glass, so that it flows over and down the tower, filling the glasses one by one. Alternatively - or if you want to go quickly - you can build the tower from filled glasses. If you choose this method, leave the top glass empty, so that you still have the opportunity to fill the top glass and watch it flow all the way down the floors, but it will all happen much faster. That way, you don't lose your guests' attention as you quietly empty bottle after bottle in the tower.
How many bottles of cava do you need?
Multiply the number of glasses in your pyramid by the volume (in cl.) each glass can hold. This will tell you how many cl. and therefore how many bottles you will need in total. A fl. of cava contains 75cl.
When will the tower be filled?
Now that you have your tower and enough champagne, all you have to do is choose the moment you want to debut your tower skills. Perhaps after a short welcome speech or a toast in honor of the bride and groom?
3 Tips for your cava tower
-
Use coupe glasses instead of flutes.
-
Don't use one as it will quickly take 4-5 bottles.
-
Possibly choose a rosé cava for a beautiful feminine look
-
Remember to bring a chair to stand on if the tower has many levels.
Enjoy!
